CALLIOPE: Goddess of Music and Poetry, Greece

Calliope – she of the beautiful voice - born of Zeus and Mnemosyne who for nine nights lay together in a hidden grove. After one year, Mnemosyne gave birth to nine daughters on snow-covered Mt. Olympus. Always singing, the voices of the nine Muses stilled the sky, the stars, the sea and the rivers.

They called their first born Calliope, most glorious of the Muses. She sang her songs of heroes. On sacred spots, by sacred springs, she touched the mouth of those she loved with sweet speech, sweet song. Singers still pray to Calliope and invite her graces.

“Eldest muse, goddess of epic poetry
beautiful voice, i surrender
give me the goods, go between
who i am and who i’m not

no false note, or extra word
calliope, who loved Achilles”
