THALIA: Goddess of Comedy, Greece

Laughing Thalia won from her mother Mnemosyne (Memory) the cessation of cares. Of all the nine Muses, Thalia is the most festive one.

Some say she is daughter of Lethe, Forgetfulness, she who banished sorrows. Another tale names her Thalia, one of the three Graces. Muses and Graces lived together on Mt. Olympus. The Graces were known to invoke the moon with tumultuous festivals during its three dark nights. Thalia the Muse or Thalia the Grace, shape-shifter, defies the threatening dark with uproar, commotion, hubbub and rumpus.

“In my family, comedy is as essential as eating or drinking. My parents started giving me "comedy" lessons as soon as I learned to talk, and still whenever we witness something even partially funny, my parents quiz me on why it was comical. To me, Thalia embodies everything that is funny, childish, ditzy, and goofy. Without Thalia, the world would be one big blob of darkness and disappear...and honestly, who wants that?”
